Montana History Coming to Life

Steve Hawkins was born in Tennessee but moved to Montana as an infant. Being raised in the farthest northwest community in Montana, otherwise known as the Yaak, Steve quickly learned the promises of the Montana wilderness - adventure, excitement, and danger.

Attending school in a traditional one-room school house setting with one teacher for eight consecutive years, Steve immersed himself in nature actively occupying his time with fishing, hunting, hiking, and exploring the great outdoors.

Upon graduating from high school in 1972, he started working for an outfitter in the one million acre Bob Marshall Wilderness located in western Montana. Steve acquired his own outfitting business in 1979, becoming one of the youngest outfitters in the "Bob".

From the very beginning, his outfitting explorations painted pictures in his mind leaving behind a story book of memories.

Unexpectedly, these memories were soon shaped and molded by his very hands. In 1991, Steve picked up a chunk of clay, creating his first piece of art work - a 6'5" pack string exemplifying great detail down to the half-hitches and slip knots on the packs and the precise buckles on the saddles.

The casting of his first piece was just the beginning of a collection of art honoring his deep-seated appreciation for the wilderness. Steve's lifetime of outfitting, horse packing, hunting, and fishing created his own unique set of experiences and actualized his perception and interaction with wildlife on a personal level, allowing him to literally sculpt wildlife, giving each creative piece life and energy.
